Splash into the memories: The Greasy Watermelon Game!

After the chanichim left that summer, the hadracha had one last hurrah—a dip in the pool and a wild game of greasy watermelon!

If you’ve never heard of it, here’s how it works: You take a watermelon, lather it in butter or oil, toss it in the pool, and try to get it to the other side while slipping, sliding, and laughing the whole way.

Ori Shaham, our fearless watermelon-wrangler, was ready to play this new game. He grabbed a watermelon from the ched, slathered it up, and marched to the pool. With all of us ready and cheering, Ori declared the start of the game and launched the watermelon…

…a few feet short of the pool. It hit the concrete and burst apart. Oops.

Luckily, we had backup melons! The second one made it in—and the greasy madness began.

Who won the game? That’s still up for debate.

What’s not up for debate? That ending the summer with a pool party full of joy, laughter, and flying fruit was exactly how it should be.
